Skin is an organ which represents some inner abnormalities and stress conditions within one’s body. Skin is just like a mirror reflection and manifesting the various type of inner abnormality or diseased condition. The permutation and combinations of the body humors (Sauda, Safra and Balgham) play a very important role in the manifestation of a Skin Disease. It is very important to know the cause of disease because, in any disease where the cause is known, treatment becomes very easy. It is in this light alone, the Treatment is the avoidance of all of the causative factors. The causative factors are classified into two groups namely external and internal. Treatment of skin diseases according to Traditional Medicine is based on various factors of a diet and lifestyle management.

Skin plays a key role in protecting the body against pathogens and excessive water loss. Its other functions are insulation, temperature regulation, sensation, storage and synthesis of vitamin D by action of ultraviolet (UV) and the protection of vitamin B folates, absorption of oxygen and drugs and water resistance. Severely damaged skin will try to heal by forming scar tissue. This is often discoloured and depigmented.

During the Rainy months, there is an increase in the Safra in one’s body. All the heat that accumulates in the body during the summer heat is aggravated in the rainy season. There are a number of skin diseases prevalent in the rainy season.

According to Traditional Medicine, the skin has seven layers, located not only superficially but extending to the deeper levels of the body. Skin disease is, mostly, rooted deeply into various tissues like fat, muscles, blood etc. Most skin treatments are generally external applications like creams or oils. These, however, never reach the deeper layers of the skin. As a result, the symptoms disappear temporarily, and the disease is not rooted out permanently. Ayurveda always tries to root out the disease by treating it specifically according to its cause. As the disease is deep-seated, it is difficult to fix the problem quickly. Skin treatments may take a few weeks to remove the symptoms but the diseases are treated permanently.

  • Adhering to an unhealthy lifestyle

Following a diet or lifestyle that is against the season or the Constitution of a person, creates an imbalance in bodily energies, thus contaminating the body tissues to produce a skin disease. In Traditional terms, although skin diseases are caused due to imbalances in all the three types of constitutions, the prime type involved is Safra. Safra symbolizes heat or fire. Therefore all those foods or activities that increase the fire element in the body should be eliminated.

Individuals with eczema, vitiligo, or psoriasis face embarrassment, worry, and depression. A survey of patients with psoriasis revealed that many deliberately avoid swimming. In addition, few wear short sleeves, shorts, or skirts because they feel that people regard them as “untouchable” or “contagious.” Playing sport is a problem for psoriasis sufferers. Children with psoriasis are more likely to be bullied. Impairment of quality of life correlates poorly with the severity of the disease. A Polish survey found that disease severity was related to impact on employability and family finances. The poor correlation of quality of life with the severity of disease and other demographic variables, such as gender and education, has also been reported.

The state of health represents the balance between the mental, emotional, physical and relational areas. The stress means an abnormal or extreme psychological adjustment to the adverse effects of the environment. About 80% of effects could be induced or aggravated by stress. The reaction to stress could be influenced by genetics and also by someone’s perception.

Stress could be three-fold :

  • Environmental
  • Behavioural
  • Psychological

Stressful events could induce a psychosomatic disease, especially in some patients with high reactivity to stress.Situations that could trigger could be :

  • Death
  • Serious illness of oneself or a family member
  • Separations or Divorces
  • Exams
  • Life changes
  • Arguments

Alongside the effect of a stressful life-event, another factor that could influence is the psychological vulnerability of the patient experiencing the stress. The higher trait of anxiety could suggest this vulnerability.

Perceived stress could be more important wand with a greater effect than the stressful event itself. The reaction of the individual is an attempt to restore the balance and depends on the coping abilities.

A more scientific approach to how stress influences skin ailments

Skin responds to different types of stressful stimuli and psychologic states. Stress intervenes with the normal flow of events in the human body by the release of neurotransmitters from nerve endings and Skin cells. Neurotransmitters are responsible for a wide variety of both physical and psychological functions including heart rate, sleep, appetite, mood, and fear. Stress has been reported to cause a decrease in the number of fighter cells, reduction in its ability to multiply or undergo cell-division, an increase in the IgA levels which indicate an Auto-immune disorder signalling that the body is using immune cells faster than it is able to produce.

Corticotropin Releasing Hormone of the Adrenal Gland is the hormone released as a response to manage stress. Its receptors present in the skin respond with an Inflammatory Response.

Stress interferes with the behaviour of Melanocytes (that which gives the skin its colour) in the synthesis of Vitamin D that occurs at the level of the skin. Thereby causing an impair in the required levels of Vitamin D in the body.

Some of the skin disorders that are triggered due to stress are:

  • Psoriasis

  • Alopecia

  • Atopic Dermatitis

  • Urticaria

  • Pruritis

  • Vitiligo

  • Lichen planus

  • Acne

  • Seborrheic dermatitis

Over the years, the number of patients opting for Traditional Medicine has also increased dramatically due to less adverse effects and permanent curative methods. Certain bio-purification methods have proven to be one among the several modes of treating the disorders. Such purification allows the biological system to return to haemostasis and to rejuvenate rapidly and also facilitates the desired pharmacotherapeutic effects of the medicine. The elimination of toxin collection is known as purification.

Every Skin Ailment is caused by a different proportion of the 5 elements. A thorough examination and consultation need to be done to evaluate the situation and the best method to treat it.

  • Digestive cleansing

  • Liver cleansing

  • Topical application

  • Herbs to be taken internally

  • Emotional support

DURATION: Depending on the severity of the ailment, the treatment time may vary from 3 to 45 days or more.
